  • Had an agricultural background, took a lot of interest in farmers' issues
  • Entered politics at the age of 17 years
  • Expelled from college for nationalist activities
  • Re-admitted after Jan-Satyagrah in front of the college
  • Barred from political activities in 1946
    • However, he continued to take part in the freedom struggle
    • Arrested in July 1946
    • Released in Sept 1947 after India's independence
  • Elected unopposed to State Legislative Assembly at the age of 26
  • Re-elected in 1952 and 1954
  • Chief whip of Congress in the Legislative Assembly
  • Member of 1st State Planning Commission
  • Member of 1st State Minimum Wages Consultative Board
  • Published and edited a weekly "Tojhilalali" focusing on trade unions
  • Chairman of Cardamom Board in 1974-76. Cardamom plantation research started during his tenure
  • Instrumental role in removing pay disparities between private and government college teachers.
  • Instrumental role in starting salary payment of private college teachers from government account
  • Established 1st unit of Youth Congress in 1953
  • Participated in 1st All-India Symposium of Youth Congress in 1957
  • Established Indian Rubber Manufacturers Federation in 1966
  • Member of Rubber Board in 1968
  • Chairman of Rubber Board from 1972-78
  • Credited with planning and implementation of World Bank schemes for rubber
  • The B.Tech course of Cochin University in rubber technology has been modeled as per his recommendations
  • Initiated India's entry in the Federation of Natural Rubber Producing Countries
  • Appointed Lt. Governor of Pondicheri on 15 may 1982
  • Appointed Governor of Gujarat on 6 Aug 1983
  • Traveled to London, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Singapore, Washington
